It’s a Holiday Tradition
by PoV Staff
The holidays are a special time when families gather to celebrate; and as they gather, traditions are often formed. Whether it’s looking at Christmas lights, reading stories or playing a round of golf, each family has its own traditions that they hold dear. We asked Rushing Media employees to share a few of their traditions with you. Merry Christmas, from our family to yours.

On Christmas morning, my brother and I wake up to Santa Claus. Once we finish opening presents, we go to my grandparents’ house with all my mom’s siblings and their families to see what Santa brought us there. We then pack up and head over to Christmas with my mom’s entire family and her cousins. We stuff our faces silly with lots of delicious food, and have a good time with family. We always realize how thankful we are to have such wonderful family, food and memories.

Since I was a little boy, my father would read a story to my sister and me right before bedtime on Christmas Eve. The book grew worn over the years and had pieces of pages missing, some including the text. My sister and I could never figure out how my dad could read the words that were torn from the pages; it remains a mystery to this day. That story, which put us in the ultimate of Christmas spirits, was “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

I made a simple Advent calendar by numbering envelopes and using clothespins to attach them to a ribbon. In each of the envelopes, I handwrote a Christmas activity. Activities range from baking Christmas cookies to writing a list to Santa, decorating the tree, singing Christmas carols, visiting Santa, reading Christmas books, wrapping Christmas gifts, looking at Christmas lights and shopping for and delivering charitable gifts, among others. Each morning, our son looks forward to opening an envelope and seeing what activity we will do that day. This tradition is fun for the whole family and is a much better alternative than a candy calendar.

My family is full of golfers. From uncles and cousins to the in-laws, we have enough golfers to form our our tournament. Year after year, everyone kept saying how much they wanted to get together and play a round of golf. Last year, the golfers on my mother’s side finally did something about it. They held the inaugural Lee Family Invitational on New Year’s Eve 2010. We had 13 family members, split into three teams, that proceeded to compete for the Lee Invitational trophy. All of the score cards were tallied, and my grandmother, Margie Lee, proudly presented the trophy at a ceremony later that night. The tradition continues this year. Invitations have been sent, and the smack talking has begun. I love the holidays!
