Helping Our Heritage by Beating the Heat

In an effort to help the elderly in our community, South Louisiana Home Health Care developed Helping Our Heritage. With the help of individuals, other local organizations and businesses, their goal is to bring comfort to the elderly as the temperatures heat up, by holding a box fan drive.

South Louisiana Home Health Care and the Terrebonne Council on Aging have come together to gather donations of both box fans and monetary gifts, with 100 percent of the donations going towards the purchase of box fans. Fans will be distributed to the elderly of our communities during the upcoming months to provide relief from the summer heat.

While most of us have the luxury of running air conditioners in our homes to battle the heat, we easily forget that this is a luxury. Many seniors do not have air conditioners or they fear running them because of high electricity bills. With the Helping Our Heritage project, the fearsome months of summer heat can be much more manageable for the elderly in our area.

A box fan is one of the most economical ways to cool a room or home. While a standard 2.5 ton central AC unit can use as much as 3,500 watts per hour and that same unit running the fan only can use as much as 750 watts per hour, a box fan only uses around 100 watts. When compared to a medium window unit, which uses around 900 watts per hour, and even a small window unit, which uses around 500 watts per hour, a box fan is least expensive option for long-term economical cooling.

Box fan and monetary donations are being accepted at South Louisiana Home Health Care, located at 7529 Park Ave, Houma; Terrebonne Council on Aging, located at 995 West Tunnel Blvd, Houma and Shady Acres Senior Center, located at 6512 West Main St, Houma.
