With the recent number of fatal crashes involving unrestrained occupants, troopers will be out enforcing seat belt usage all cross the state.
In response, Louisiana State Police Troop C will have increased number of troopers on patrol working to keep motorist safe. This extra allocation of manpower is made possible by overtime funds provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
In 2009, 65 percent of drivers killed in Louisiana were not wearing a seat belt. Louisiana State Police Troop C would like the public to be responsive to this statistic by making sure everyone in a vehicle is properly restrained.
Louisiana law requires all occupants in the vehicle to be properly restrained regardless of their age or seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.
This is a community effort, so Louisiana State Police Troop C is asking for your help. If anyone observes unsafe or impaired driving, please call *LSP (*577) on a cellular phone or contact your local law enforcement agency.
Here are five things to remember about buckling up:
- Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
- Air bags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them.
- The lap belt and shoulder belt are secured across the pelvis and rib cage, which are more able to withstand crash forces than other parts of the body.
- Make sure the seatbelts fit properly and are adjusted correctly.
- Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time.
Captain Darrin Naquin and the men and women of the Louisiana State Police Troop C would like to remind everyone to be safe and report any suspicious or dangerous activities on the highway by calling *LSP (*577).
