Artist Exhibits Cajun Lifestyle at Southdown
by Terry Trahan Jr.
The Cajun lifestyle is on full display as part of an exhibit at Southdown Plantation. The exhibit features textured acrylic paintings that depict vivid images ranging from Southern architecture to seafood.
Local artist Donna Graham developed the exhibit as a way to share her heritage with those around her, as well as those less familiar with the traditional way of life in south Louisiana.
“People can reflect on it,” Graham said about the interpretation of culture in her art. “I have embraced my Cajun heritage. I am inspired by the simple things around me. I am doing what I love, and hopefully that harmony is reflected in my work.”
The exhibit features work from the artist’s “A City That Never Dies” series, which depicts the intricate style of tombs in south Louisiana. The “Louisiana Blue Crab” series also highlights a culinary staple in the region. As part of the “City Life” series, wrought-iron balconies, shotgun houses, pelicans and other scenes reflect a Southern lifestyle.
Graham’s “Pebbles” series relies on texture to convey the mood of each piece. Using a combination of modeling paste, sand, pebbles and other natural elements, she explores the landscape from an organic perspective. These textures combine with rich, contrasting colors to create bold, interesting paintings.
“I give it some texture to make it more interesting,” she said.
The artist’s images serve as a window into elements that depict the Cajun way of life. When searching for inspiration, she ventures into the natural landscape to observe the beauty of what’s around her.
“I take a camera when I go,” Graham said. “I like to go exploring and take pictures of the environment.”
It’s an activity the artist has always enjoyed doing. She has been drawing since she first learned how to hold a pencil.
“I’ve always done it,” Graham said. “My daddy was an artist. It wasn’t a profession. He was just creative.”
She remained a self-taught artist until age 22. That’s when she moved to Texas to attend the Art Institute of Dallas. After graduating in 1991, she returned to south Louisiana and taught art at St. Bernadette Catholic School in Houma.
Graham now owns her own studio, D-Designs Art Studio, where she teaches semiprivate art lessons and adult workshops. She also takes on freelance art projects and participates in craft shows throughout the year.
The artist’s latest collections will be on exhibit at Southdown Plantation, 1208 Museum Drive, Houma, through Feb. 16.
