Back-to-School at the Library

Back-to-School at the Library

As children and teens across Terrebonne Parish file back into classrooms, the Terrebonne Parish Library System is in full swing and prepare to assist with back-to-school studying and homework needs. Don’t forget, the most important school supply you can get for your children this year is a Terrebonne Parish Knowledge Card.

Although everyone knows the library is packed with books, encyclopedias and dictionaries for the public to use and check out, very few know what other sorts of resources the library offers. Some resources are evenaccessible in your own home!

Each library in the Terrebonne Parish Library System has multiple computers that are connected to the internet, making surfing the web easy and convenient. The Main Library and East Houma Branch have computers specifically designated for children, teens and adults, so that studying and research is geared toward the appropriate age group.

Each computer is linked to a printing network, so that printouts can be made for homework or school projects.

The Terrebonne Parish Library loves
to remind its patrons that we’re so much
more than just books. Stop by any one of your
nine local library branches, sign upfor a
Knowledge Card, and start discovering.

Speaking of school projects, the library offers a large selection of various databases for all ages. Children and teens needing information for reports can log on to World Book and Elibrary. Elibrary provides users with information from newspapers, magazines, books, and even video recordings, as well as a huge selection of public domain pictures.

Teens may find Mango Languages to be extremely helpful to them this school year. Many high school students are required to take at least two credits of foreign languages. Mango Languages database helps anyone interested in learning a new language with its interactive format and progress tracking system. Mango Languages serves as a great learning tool and aid to any student enrolled in a foreign language course.

One database the Terrebonne Parish Library System is extremely excited to announce is Tutor.com. Tutor.com is a live, completely interactive tutoring database for students of all ages, provided by Homework Louisiana. Elementary, high school, and even college-aged students can receive tutoring in English, science, social studies and math from a live tutor. Additionally, help with GRE, ACT, SAT and other such standardized testing is available.

Adults can take advantage of Tutor.com with its resume writing and job-finding skill assistance. Accessing the Skills Center Resource Library of Tutor.com, adults can select “Adult Services” and get started on a variety of adult-based learning and instruction.

Tutors are available Sunday through Thursday 2 p.m. - 10 p.m.; however, the Skills Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tutor.com can be accessed from any computer in any of the library system’s libraries or from home with a valid and in-good-standing Terrebonne Parish Knowledge Card.
