A Taste of a Cajun Christmas
by Katie LeCompte
A Taste of a Cajun Christmas featuring special guest Marcelle Bienvenu will take place on Wednesday, December 15 from 6:30 - 9 p.m. at Southdown Plantation.
The annual Christmas event will feature holiday cuisine made from Bienvenu’s cookbooks, as well as cocktails and desserts. In addition to a holiday atmosphere, there will be a silent auction, music and an open bar.
The planned menu includes leek and tasso soup, marinated green beans and tomatoes, crawfish soufflé over corn bread, spinach bread, oyster and artichoke casserole, wild rice torres, pork tenderloin, syrup cake and apple cake.
“I am looking forward to see how the dishes from my cookbooks will be presented and enjoyed,” Bienvenu says. “Since I’ve been teaching at Nicholls in the culinary department for the past two years, I have met so many delightful people from this area.”

Last year the museum featured Julia Child’s cookbook. But, a decision was made by the special events committee to focus on a popular, local chief that guests could interact with this year.
“The great thing about Christmas events at Southdown is that it evolves every year,” Katie LeCompte, Southdown Executive Director, says. “This year, we are ecstatic to feature a local chief who enriches our community like Mrs. Bienvenu does.”
Bienvenu is the author of “Who’s Your Mama, Are You Catholic and Can You Make a Roux?” and “Cajun Cooking for Beginners.” She is also the co-author of “Stir the Pot: The History of Cajun Cuisine” and has collaborated with Emeril Lagasse on various books and projects. Bienvenu currently writes a popular column in The Times Picayune.
Bienvenu said she is excited to be a part of A Taste of a Cajun Christmas and looks forward to meeting the event’s attendees.
“I am thrilled and excited to be honored at the Southdown event,” Bienvenu says. “I had no idea that I had such an audience in the Houma area.”
Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased in the museum office Monday - Friday. For more information or tickets, please call the office at 851-0154 or stop by at 1208 Museum Drive, Houma. At the event Bienvenu’s cookbooks will be available for purchase and she will be available for autographs.
A Taste of a Cajun Christmas is sponsored by the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society. All proceeds will be used to fund exhibits, daily operation and repairs to Southdown Plantation and Museum.
