100 Black Men 13th Annual Fun Run
by Howard J. Castay, Jr.
The 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish invite runners and walkers to join in their 13th Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, September 4 in historic downtown Morgan City. Butch Metz, vice-president of the organization, welcomes everyone to take part in this event.
“Your participation will not be measured by how fast you walk, but by the level of your enthusiasm and your commitment to help send a black history maker of tomorrow to college,” Metz said. “We encourage men and women of all ages and races to participate, and to bring their children. In fact, many dads and moms run the entire course while pushing their infant’s stroller. It’s great fun for the whole family.”
This run supports the scholarship fund of the 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish. The organization awards multiple $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from St. Mary Parish public high schools.
Clarence Robinson, Jr., president of the organization, said the organization has awarded over $65,000 in scholarships to young men and women in St. Mary Parish public schools, from Morgan City to Baldwin. “We enjoy blessing our youth, and look forward to continuing this tradition,” he said.
Runners and walkers can download an application at www.kbze.com/2010.html. Registration begins at 7a.m. on Saturday in front of Morgan City Hall, located on the corner of First and Everett Streets.
The 5K Run will begin at 8 a.m. in the Morgan City historic district, near city hall. Walkers immediately follow the runners.
Trophies and metals will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in each the following age categories 13 and under, 14-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54 and 55 and over. The overall first place male and female winner will receive $250 in cash.
